Why your 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Drive makers count in decimal: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems often count in binary and label the result GB, so the same bytes become 931 GiB. Nothing is missing - two different definitions of "giga" are in play.
Which one to use
- Decimal (1000): storage devices, cloud quotas, network speeds, file sizes in most spec sheets.
- Binary (1024): RAM, and older operating systems that display GiB as GB.
- At the GB scale the two differ by about 7.4 percent; at TB about 10 percent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?
Both are used: 1 GB = 1,000 MB in decimal SI, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB in binary IEC. This page shows both columns.
Why does a 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The maker counts decimal bytes while the OS displays binary units with a GB label. The bytes are all there.
How big is the difference?
About 7.4 percent at the GB scale and about 10 percent at the TB scale.
